Town of Burladingen paralyzed by ransomware

Ransomware attacks are increasingly affecting the ability of communities to function. A current example: the city of Burladingen in Baden-Württemberg.

As the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) already stated in its “Federal Situation Report Cybercrime 2021”, the threat and damage potential of encryption Trojans has increased noticeably. According to the BKA report, such attacks also impair the functioning of the community – centron reported.

The city of Burladingen near Tübingen in Baden-Württemberg recently experienced the devastating consequences of a ransomware attack. The city administration was paralyzed and blackmailed by ransomware on July 13, 2022. As a result, the administration was initially only available by telephone, and the town halls remained closed. Emergency operation was set up on July 19, and the city administration has only been fully available since July 25, as announced on its website on July 26. According to the statement, basic citizen concerns relating to the citizens’ office are possible again, with the exception of business registrations and the issuing of liquor licenses. The city’s IT team is still working flat out to restore all systems.
