What can servers actually do?

Servers are omnipresent in IT. A server is either software that communicates with a so-called client or the hardware required for this. Due to the decentralized structure of the Internet, servers play an important role, especially on the Web: data and applications are stored on them, which are accessed remotely from the client, i.e. the Internet user’s PC. Every website needs a server from which it can be accessed via the Internet. In this context, one also speaks of a host.

They have the choice between different products: from storage space on a host used by several customers, to their own host, to managed hosting, where the provider offers maintenance services in addition to providing the infrastructure. By renting a server, customers can outsource complex tasks. With this so-called outsourcing, service providers provide the partial or complete infrastructure. It is possible, for example, to expand the storage space on the server or to install various applications such as online shops or other server-side programs.

A machine can also be operated locally by the customer. This requires both the hardware and the software, which together enable remote access to data and applications. In principle, a simple computer connected to the Internet is sufficient for this. The decision to operate your own machine or to outsource the hosting depends in particular on the personnel and time required.
