Software provider victim of cyber attack

The Berlin software provider Smart Insurtech was the victim of a cyber attack. Data is said not to have leaked, but several applications had to be taken offline as a result of the attack.

A cyber attack was recently carried out on the Berlin company Smart InsurTech AG, operator of the insurance platform Smart Insur. According to the company’s press release, the hacker attack was discovered on the night of February 9th, 2023.

Procedure of Smart Insurtech

Despite the security measures taken by the Hypoport subsidiary, the still unknown perpetrators were able to compromise both the “Smart Consult” consulting software and the “Smart Cloud” cloud solution, which then had to be taken offline. According to the company, parts of the “Smart Gevo” document service are affected, which is why individual applications have been taken offline. The other products Smart Admin, Smart Check and Smart Compare are not affected by the incident and can therefore be used without any problems.

In addition to the emergency plan for taking the affected products or sub-applications offline, the responsible data protection supervisory authority and affected customers were informed. In addition, a criminal complaint was filed with the responsible investigating authority.

According to Smart Insurtech, there is no sign of data leakage. On its website, the company provides transparent information about the cyber attack and provides up-to-date information on the measures taken and the progress made.

Insurers are a popular target for hackers

The attack on Smart Insurtech is not the first within the insurance industry. Cyber attacks on the liability insurance company, Baloise and the Munich insurer WWK have already been reported in the past, as reported by the free financial magazine procontra. The fact that insurers hold a large amount of sensitive customer data makes them an attractive target for cybercriminals.
