Processor market: AMD is growing again

The CPU market experienced its biggest downturn on record last year. AMD emerged as the big winner: The manufacturer was able to increase its market share.

The processor manufacturer AMD was able to sell more processors again in the fourth quarter of 2022. Its total market share increased from 28.5 percent in the third quarter of 2022 to 31.3 percent now. Market leader Intel is meanwhile weakening and falls accordingly from 71.5 to 68.7 percent.

AMD owes this success largely to its Epyc server CPUs. In this CPU segment, it is also expected that AMD could increase its market share even beyond the 30 percent mark by the end of this year.

Record CPU market downturn

While AMD has reason to be happy, there is bad news for the processor market as a whole: Only 374 million units (excluding ARM processors) were shipped last year, down 21 percent year-on-year. According to Mercury Research, this is the sharpest downturn in the chip market since records began in the 1980s.

The record downturn can be explained by growing inflation and economic uncertainty, which tend to discourage potential customers from making purchases. In addition, many people only equipped themselves with new PCs and notebooks for working from home during the corona pandemic.
